Every profession teaches something valuable. Perhaps our challenge isn’t discovering more talent, perhaps it’s recognising the talent that’s already around us.
Mentoring has reinforced that belief.
The biggest breakthroughs I’ve witnessed rarely happened after someone passed an exam, they happened after someone changed the language they used about themselves.
Instead of, “I’m just…” They started saying, “I’ve spent years…”
That shift might seem small. But it changes everything.
Because confidence isn’t always about becoming someone different. Sometimes it’s about finally recognising who you’ve already become. As I think back over this week, I keep returning to one simple thought.
Careers don’t only change because opportunities appear, they change because people begin believing they’re ready to accept them.
Perhaps that’s the real work.
Helping people see possibilities they couldn’t see before, whether that’s through mentoring, leadership or simply one honest conversation. If there’s one belief I’ll carry into next week, it’s this.
Every conversation has the potential to change someone’s career.
We rarely know which one it will be, so perhaps we should treat every conversation as though it matters.
Because sometimes…
It does.
I’d love to leave you with one reflection.
Think back to one conversation that changed your career.
Not because it gave you an answer.
But because it changed the way you saw yourself.
