Why your next career breakthrough probably isn’t another exam
A few years ago, I had a conversation that has stayed with me ever since. A professional reached out asking for advice about transitioning into cybersecurity.
They had already completed Security+.
They were studying for CySA+.
Next on the list was CISSP.
After that, they planned to complete ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, Microsoft Security certifications and several cloud security courses.
I asked a simple question.
“How many cybersecurity roles have you applied for?”
Their answer surprised me.
“None yet. I don’t think I’m ready.”
Every week I meet talented professionals who believe one more certification will finally give them the confidence to apply. But confidence rarely comes from collecting certificates. It comes from demonstrating capability.
The certification trap
Let me be clear. I believe certifications are valuable , they provide structure, introduce important concepts and demonstrate commitment to learning. Throughout my own career, continuous professional development has always been important.
But certifications were never designed to replace experience, communication or professional judgement. Yet somewhere along the way, many professionals began treating certifications like permission slips.
“Once I complete this exam, I’ll apply.”
Then another certification appears.
And another.
The finish line keeps moving.
Before long, people have invested thousands of pounds and hundreds of hours learning…
…but still haven’t submitted their first application.
Knowledge becomes valuable when it’s applied…
